Postcard from Berlin

photo.jpgHello from the Berlinale

The Berlinale is amazing–the whole city seems to breathe films. My part took place in the Talent Campus, which hosts 350 filmmakers from over 100 countries. And, what gathering of filmmakers would truly be complete without a panel about title design? I was honored to be speaking on that subject along with Berlin designer Darius Ghanai, who has created sequences for Wim Wenders, among others.

Complimenting our panel (a coincidence, as it had no relation to the Berlinale) was the recently opened Vorspannkino, an exhibit dedicated to film titles at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art. If you happen to be in Berlin, drop by this artspace which has a wonderful smattering of titles, some very familiar, some not. My favorite was an Italian one in which credits are sung.

The clips were divided into four kinos. In one, the screens hung in space, with the title still from each sequence remained frozen. The projectors were timed to go off one by one, around the room. It was particularly nice way to deal with film/video in a gallery space. No more monitors with endless loops!
