Choose One: Recycle, Compost or Landfill

While visiting the new California Academy of Sciences over the Thanksgiving holiday I spotted their unique trash receptacles. While recycle bins are quite common, I had not yet seen bins labeled “compost” and “landfill” at a public facility. It is cool to encourage people to think about where their waste actually goes.

On top of the bins they designated what should go in each one:
Recycle = Clean paper, bottles, cans, plastic
Compost = Food, paper food containers, coffee cups, napkins
Landfill = Styrofoam, plastic bags

The next morning I noticed that the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market had similarly named bins, but with even more detail as to what should go in each one.

Can we get one or two of these for the school? They rock!

Plastic bags can be recycled, too!!

Actually, ALL plastics cannot be recycled, only down-cycled.

And yes, the Academy is really cool, except for the section with a tiny penguin tank.

Haven’t people seen “Happy Feet”?

Do you know who was the supplier of these bins?

Hi Sophie, I don’t know who the supplier is. You would have to contact the Academy. It would be easy enough to make your own decals though.
